What is Difference between Layer 2 and Layer 3 Switch

There are some difference between Layer 2 and Layer 3 Switch. Switch is a device which is used to Connect multiple computer together to share data, Information  with in a local area Network (LAN). There are two type of Switch layer 2 Switch and layer 3 Switch .

Difference between Layer 2 and Layer 3 Switch

Layer 2 Switch

Layer 2 Switch used for high speed data connectivity within a single network . It is operate on Data link layer  of OSI model .

Layer 2 switch used MAC address to receive and forward packet within a network , Layer 2 switch create MAC table for forward packet on specific port . when any device connected with switch then it will store Port and MAC address information on mac table .Layer 2 switch only for only used for switching .

Layer 2 switch Model – 2950, 1900 .

Layer 3 Switch

Layer 3 Switch used to connect multiple network together. It can route Packet as well as Switching . It is work based on IP address . It is also have the capability of create Virtual LAN (VLAN) . it is determine path based on Logical Address . It is operate on Network layer of the OSI Model . 

Layer 3 Switch Model – 4503 ,5500 .
