How to Backup and Restore CISCO Router Configuration file to TFTP

You can Backup and Restore CISCO Router Configuration file to TFTP server. we will learn how to to backup Cisco Router Running configuration. For an IT organisation Computer networking devices is very important thing. Now a days every organisation performance depend on Information Technology for Data Communication. So Computer networking devices such as Routers, Switches ans Servers is very critical things. So we should have keep backup of these device. So that in case of crash Router, we can restore Running-configuration to new install Router. Its very useful to reduce the down time for an Organisation which depend on Computer Networking.

Requirement

  • TFTP Server should be Install on Machine on which you have to take Backup.
  • Router Should be able to reach TFTP Sever Machine ( Verify with Ping).

Install and Configure TFTP Server on Machine

  1. First of all Download Solar Wind TFTP Server. Then Install on your PC.
  2. Now Create a Folder on your Machine, on which you have to take Backup. 
  3. Now launch TFTP Server, Then Click on File Menu and then Click on Configure.
  4. Now Click on General tab, then click on Browse on TFTP Server Root Directory: in Storage Section. then select Folder which you have created.

5. Now Click on Start Button. Now your TFTP Server Running…

  1. Now Go to Router that you have to take Backup and make sure, Now Ping TFTP Server Machine and make sure connectivity should be OK.

2.  Now on the Router Console Mode, Type below commands

 

Now it will ask to IP Address of TFTP Server, then type IP Address

 

 

Now its ask for the name of the Destination backup File name, you can just press enter to default file name, or Give name of the Backup Files. in my case I have given Backup1.

3. Now you can see File Transfer Logs in TFTP Server. Now go to the Folder which you have created and See that Backup file in the Root Directory of TFTP Server., Yo can view that configuration on Notpad ++.

Now, Suppose you have installed new Router instead of old one, Now you have to restore old router Configuration to new router, otherwise you will have to re-configure all things. Now follow below steps to learn.

  1. Make sure that TFTP server is running and Configuration File should there in root Directory. 
  2. Now go to Router on which you have to take back, and Login in Console mode.
  3. Now Type below command in Console mode.

 

Now type the IP Address of the TFTP Server, Enter.

 

Now give Source File name (Backup1)  which you want to restore, Enter

 

Now on Destination file name you can leave it blank and just enter.
